The Origins of the Cambridge University Energy Network

The Foundation

When Ronan Kavanagh started research in power generation systems he recognised that students, ambitious to become leaders in the energy industry and to tackle the diverse technical, economic and political challenges facing this industry, required something more than the University provided. As well as offering their own expertise, students must be able to communicate this effectively, participate in dialogue and debate and most importantly understand the truly multi-disciplinary nature of the challenges.

This led to the foundation of the Cambridge University Energy Network.

The Vision

The vision is to provide students from all disciplines the opportunity to develop into the leaders of tomorrow in the field of sustainable energy. We established a discussion group series which covered topics ranging from the Hydrogen economy to financing clean coal technologies in China. Student leads would offer their expertise, and the discussion group offered them a unique opportunity to develop their communication skills and to participate in debate and dialogue, whilst the other student participants broadened their knowledge base.

The Cambridge Annual Energy Conference is a much broader net which draws in students and academics from major universities in the UK and delegates from industry. The symposium takes on a specific theme facing the energy industry and provides all participants a unique opportunity to network, present their research and hopefully sow the seed for collaborative ventures and research.

The Future is Bright

Having recently handed over the leadership of CUEN to the current committee I am certain that CUEN will be a keystone in maintaining the status of Cambridge as a University that can lead, take on the technical, political and economic challenges of this fast moving industry, and above all, a University that develops students into the leaders of the energy industry for the 21st Century.
